How the Pet Finder scores all 50 pets

The sliders above are not decoration — every one of the 50 animals on this site has been rated on the same six things, and the list re-ranks the moment you move a control. Here is what each setting means, so you can set them honestly.

Space

Small space means a tank, cage or terrarium on a table — 26 pets live happily that way. A home with no yard suits animals that need floor room but no outdoors (15 pets). A house with a yard is for the 5 animals that need a garden — aquatic turtle, chicken, dog, duck and quail — and Lots of room is the 4 that need real land or a very large enclosure: goat, iguana, mini pig and pony.

Daily time

A little is a few minutes a day (22 pets), Some is a real chore slot of half an hour or so (20 pets), and Lots means an hour or more every single day — walks, play, training, or a diet that has to be prepared fresh. That is 8 pets: dog, ferret, goat, iguana, mini pig, parrots, pony and sugar glider. Be honest here: this is the setting families most often set too high.

Budget

Low cost, Medium cost and Higher cost are about the running cost once the habitat is bought — food, bedding, vet visits — not the animal's price tag. 24 pets are low cost month to month. The one-time setup is a separate number, and the pet cost study has it for every animal.

Cuddles and handling

Best to watch pets (16 of them) are fascinating but not for holding — fish, most reptiles, the insects. Some cuddles animals tolerate gentle, short handling. Very cuddly is the 8 pets that actively seek you out: cat, dog, ferret, guinea pig, mini pig, parrots, rat and sugar glider. If a child wants something to hold, this is the slider that matters most.

Experience

Great first pet flags the 17 animals that forgive beginner mistakes. Some experience means you should have kept something simpler first. For experts is reserved for the 11 pets whose diet, habitat or temperament punishes guesswork: axolotl, chameleon, ferret, goat, iguana, mini pig, parrots, pony, scorpion, sugar glider and tarantula.

Lifespan

A few years (13 pets) suits a family that is not sure how long the interest will last. About 5–10 years is the 17 animals that will see a child through primary school. 10+ years is a commitment that can outlast childhood — 20 pets, some of which live for decades.

The must-have boxes

The four chips under the sliders filter rather than score. Awake during the day keeps the 33 pets that are not nocturnal. Safe to pick up every day keeps the 11 that welcome hands-on handling. Happy on its own keeps the 28 that can be kept singly, and Needs a friend keeps the 22 that must live in pairs or groups — a rule, not a preference, for those animals. The allergy column below marks the 28 pets with no fur or feathers.
