The eleven questions, and why we ask them
Here is the whole quiz before you start it. Every answer changes which pets can win — the allergy question carries the most weight, and the last one is mostly there to break ties. There are no wrong answers, only honest ones: the quiz is only as useful as the week you actually have.
1Where would your new pet live?
Space decides more than almost anything else here. A tank or a cage fits on a desk; a dog needs room to move and somewhere to be walked every day. Answer for the home you actually have, not the one you are hoping for — outgrowing its space is one of the most common reasons a pet gets given up. Everything further down the list is filtered by what you pick here.

2How much time can you spend on your pet each day?
Every pet costs time, every single day, and the ones that look easiest still need feeding, cleaning and checking on. Think about your busiest week rather than your calmest one — school nights, matches, visitors, holidays. Fifteen honest minutes a day is a real answer and it still matches you with plenty of animals. Overestimating at this question is how good intentions turn into a neglected cage.

3Who will mostly take care of the pet?
This is not another time question — it is about who is actually responsible when the novelty wears off. Some animals are forgiving of a beginner's mistakes. Others are fragile, fast, or strong enough that a grown-up needs to be involved whatever the child's age. We use your answer to match how much adult involvement an animal genuinely needs, not to judge how capable the kid is.

4How old is the kid who'll care for the pet?
Age matters for two reasons. Small hands and quick, delicate animals are a difficult combination, and a pet chosen for a nine-year-old may well still be alive when that child leaves home. We match the animal's handling needs to the age you pick. If several children will share the pet, answer for the youngest one who will really be doing the caring.

5Pets cost money — food, gear, and vet visits. What's the family budget?
The price on the tag is almost never the big number. Housing, heating, food, bedding and vet care are, and they keep arriving every month for the whole life of the animal. Pick the budget you could keep up for years, not the one you could stretch to this week. A smaller budget does not mean a worse pet — it means a different one.

6Do you want to hold and cuddle your pet?
Some animals enjoy being handled, some put up with it, and some are genuinely stressed by it. There is no wrong answer to this question, but there is one mismatch that makes everybody miserable: wanting a cuddly pet and going home with one that would rather be left alone. If watching is enough for you, that opens up some of the most fascinating animals on the list.

7How do you feel about noise and mess?
Noise and mess are what families underestimate most, because nobody raises them in the shop. Barking, a wheel running at two in the morning, bedding kicked across the floor, damp patches, smell — all of it normal, none of it optional. Answering honestly matters more here than it looks, because this is the part you live with rather than the part you pictured.

8Is anyone in your home allergic to fur or feathers?
Allergies are the one answer that can rule a pet out completely, which is why this question carries the most weight of any in the quiz. Fur and feathers are the usual triggers, though bedding, hay and dust play their part too. If anyone in the house is unsure, say so — a shorter, safer list beats a pet that has to be given back.

9How long would you like your pet to be part of your family?
A lifespan is a promise, not a detail. Some pets share a couple of good years; others are still with you a decade or two later, through house moves, new schools and children who have grown up and left. Neither is the better choice. What matters is that the length you pick is one your family can genuinely commit to, including whoever cares for the animal later on.

10Have you had pets before?
First pets should be forgiving. Experience is not really about knowing facts — it is about having already learned what an unwell animal looks like, and what happens when a routine slips for a few days. If this is your first, we will steer you toward animals that cope with a learning curve. There is always something more demanding next time.

How does this pet quiz work?
You answer eleven questions about your home, your time, your budget and what you actually want from a pet. Every one of the 50 animals we cover is scored against those answers, and the closest fits come out on top with a percentage beside them. Nothing is saved, there is no sign-up, and you can take it again as often as you like.
How long does the quiz take?
About a minute. Eleven questions, one tap each, and then two optional steps — a must-have checklist and your location, which adds local pet laws and climate to the result. Skip both and you still get your match.
Is this pet quiz suitable for kids?
It is written for them. The questions use plain language, every answer is a single tap, and the result explains why a pet fits rather than just naming one. Children can take it on their own — the budget question and the one about who does the caring are the two worth answering with a grown-up nearby.
What if someone in the house is allergic?
Say so on the allergy question and the quiz stops offering animals that would be a problem. That single answer carries more weight in the scoring than any other. Plenty of rewarding pets have neither fur nor feathers, so an allergy narrows the list rather than ending the search.
Can the quiz tell me whether I am ready for a pet?
That is a different question and it gets its own answer. Once you have a match, every pet has an "Am I ready?" checklist that walks through what owning one is really like — the daily jobs, the costs nobody mentions, and the parts people find hardest to keep up.
What if I do not like the pet I get?
Take it again. A different honest answer gives a different match, and the runner-up list underneath shows every other animal scored against you, so you can see what came close and why. The quiz is a way to start the conversation, not a verdict.
