๐ How to Set Up a Freshwater Aquarium for Beginners
Setting up your first freshwater aquarium is easier than it looks if you go in order. A beginner fish tank needs a properly sized tank, a filter, a heater (for tropical fish), and a few days to "cycle" before adding fish.
Bigger tanks are actually easier โ more water stays more stable. Start with hardy beginner fish like guppies, platies, or zebra danios, and add a clean-up crew of shrimp and snails once the tank is established. Test your water and never overfeed.
The nitrogen cycle is the secret to success. Before adding fish, run your filter for a few weeks (or use a bottled bacteria starter) so beneficial bacteria can grow to handle fish waste. Test your water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, do a small weekly water change, and add fish slowly โ a few at a time. Patience now prevents most beginner fish losses later.
