๐ Privacy Policy
Your privacy matters, especially since families and children use this site and our app. Here's exactly what happens with your information.
๐ On this website
Your choices stay in your browser. Your saved quiz progress, Pet Finder settings, region and currency choices, favorites, setup-checklist ticks, and game progress are stored on your device (in your browser's local storage). They stay there โ we can't read them, and clearing your browser data removes them.
What we do record, anonymously. Two things leave your device, and neither one identifies you:
- Finished quiz runs. When you reach a result, we record which pet you matched with, the match percentage, the two runners-up, the answer choices you picked (as position numbers, e.g. "2,0,3,1"), any must-haves you ticked, and your region code if you set one. That's how the live match counter and the pet quiz stats page work, and how we spot questions that aren't doing their job. There is no name, email, account, IP address, or device identifier attached โ the record is a row of household circumstances and a pet, and it can't be traced back to a person or joined up with anything else. Nothing is sent if you don't finish the quiz.
- Game high scores. If you beat the daily or all-time best in one of our games, we record the score and the three-letter arcade initials you choose to enter. Initials are letters only and filtered โ please don't enter your real name.
If you'd rather not send either one, blocking scripts for this site in your browser stops both; everything else keeps working.
Approximate location (country only, and only if you ask). Adding your location is optional. Only when you tap "Yes" to add it (on the quiz or the Pet Finder) does our website host detect the country your internet connection appears to be in and send just that two-letter country code back to your browser, to pre-fill the Country box. It's a starting suggestion you can change or clear at any time โ we don't store it, link it to you, or use your exact location, and if you don't opt in we don't check it at all.
Children's privacy. This site is designed for families. We never ask children for personal information, and our contact form and workbook checkout are meant for grown-ups. Parents should supervise younger children online. In our app, kids never sign in or type anything; see Children below.
Analytics. We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages people enjoy. It uses cookies and collects things like your device type, pages visited, and approximate location โ never your name or exact address. You can learn more in Google's privacy policy or block analytics cookies in your browser.
Anonymous feedback. If you rate the site in our "Are you enjoying this site?" popup, we receive only the star rating, your optional comment, and which page you were on โ never your name, email, or any other personal information. Please don't include personal details in comments.
Contact form. If you send us a message, your name, email, and message are delivered to us by Formspree, our form provider, and are used only to reply to you โ never sold or shared.
Workbook checkout. If you buy our workbook, payment happens on our store partner Lemon Squeezy's site. They collect your email and payment details under their own privacy policy โ we never see your card number.
Affiliate cookies. Retailer links (like Amazon) may set their own cookies to credit purchases. You can control or delete cookies in your browser settings.
๐ฑ In our app
What the app is for. WhatPet helps a family or a class look after its pets: setup checklists, care jobs written for kids, reminders, and the same quizzes, care guides and games as this website. It has no ads, no shop links and no tracking.
No account needed to start. Until a grown-up signs in, everything you add (pets, people, jobs and ticks) stays on that one device. Deleting the app deletes it.
Signing in to share between devices. To share a family or class with other phones and tablets, a grown-up signs in with Apple or Google. Apple or Google gives us your email address (Apple lets you hide it), and Google also passes along your name. We use them only to sign you in. We don't send you email, and we never share them.
Kids and class tablets never sign in. A kid's tablet or a classroom display joins by scanning a code that a grown-up shows on their phone. Each code works once and expires after 10 minutes. The tablet gets an anonymous account with no name, email or password.
What your family or class shares. Once a grown-up signs in, the following is kept in our cloud database (Google Firebase, in the United States) so every device in your group sees the same thing. First names or nicknames are all you need.
- Each person's nickname and color. A grown-up adds them; kids never type anything.
- Your pets: name, species, arrival or "home since" date, and an optional photo. Only a small copy of the photo (about 60 KB) is shared; the original stays on your phone.
- Notes a grown-up adds: a pet's weight log and notes, and a teacher's notes for a substitute.
- Jobs, who they're for, and who ticked them off and when, plus setup checklist ticks.
- Class schedules: school days, breaks and weekend hosts.
- The list of linked devices.
Only devices in your group can read it. We never sell it, and we never use it for advertising.
Reminders and notices. Job reminders are scheduled on each device and never leave it. If a grown-up turns on "Tell me when it's done" or "Tell a grown-up if it's not done by bedtime," our server sends a notice to the grown-ups' phones, such as "Ava did a job: Food and fresh water for Hamster โ". Notices pass through Expo, our notification service, and through Apple or Google, which deliver notifications to phones. To send the bedtime notice on time, grown-ups' phones store the next week's job times with the group, and each one is deleted within two days after it passes. You can turn notifications off in your device's settings at any time.
The camera and your photos. The app asks to use the camera only to take a pet's photo or to scan a join code, and asks for your photos only when you choose a pet photo. It keeps only the small copy described above.
Kept on the device. Read-aloud uses your device's built-in voice. The grown-up PIN is stored scrambled (as a hash) on that device and is never sent anywhere. Home-screen widgets show a summary (nicknames, pet names and today's jobs) saved on the device.
Quizzes, guides and games. These are built into the app and work offline. When you open the app, it checks this website for updated pet information (at most every six hours), downloading the same public files anyone can read; nothing about you is sent. When you finish the pet quiz, the app records the same anonymous result described above for the website, plus whether it came from the iPhone or Android app. Game scores stay on your device, and the app has no public leaderboards.
No ads and no tracking. The app has no ads, no shop or affiliate links, and no analytics or advertising tools, and it doesn't use your device's advertising ID. Links to this website open in your web browser. In the kid view they need a grown-up first, because the website has shop links.
Deleting your data. A grown-up can open Family (or Class) โ Sync & devices โ "Delete โฆ from the cloud." That deletes your group's pets, people, jobs and history, removes every linked device, and deletes your account. If you signed in with Apple, it also tells Apple to remove the app's access to your Apple ID. A grown-up can also remove any single device, and a kid's tablet can remove itself. Without the app, follow the steps on our Delete your data page. To get a copy of your data, contact us and we'll send it.
Children. Kids never sign in, never type anything into the app, and can't add photos or post anything public. A grown-up, either a parent or a teacher, sets up each kid's profile and controls everything, including deleting it.
Schools. Teachers add students by first name or nickname. We don't collect student emails, last names, grades or school records, and we use class data only to run the app for that class. Schools that need a student data privacy agreement can contact us.
Who helps us run the app. Google Firebase (our database and sign-in), Vercel (runs this website and the server that sends notices), Expo (sends notifications), and Apple and Google (sign-in, notification delivery and the app stores). They process data for us only to provide these services.
