Dalmatians can do well with children who already know how to be calm and gentle. Expect a big dog that is high-energy, sheds heavily and needs very little grooming. Fine alone for a few hours.

Dalmatians were coach dogs. They ran alongside horse-drawn carriages for miles, guarding the rig and clearing the road, and later attached themselves to horse-drawn fire engines — which is how they became the firehouse mascot. That job produced a dog with enormous stamina and a genuine need to run, which is the single biggest reason Dalmatians end up in rescue after the films create demand. Two health facts every prospective owner should know: a significant proportion of Dalmatians are born deaf in one or both ears, so puppies should be BAER-tested, and the breed has a unique quirk of uric acid metabolism that makes urinary stones common, so constant fresh water and the right diet genuinely matter. Puppies are born pure white.

Day to day. High-energy — this is a dog that needs a real outlet every single day, not a stroll. Skip that and you get chewing, barking and digging, which is not naughtiness, it is boredom. A food puzzle at dinner time is the cheapest way to give a busy brain a job when the weather cuts the walk short. On noise, it is about average.

The coat, honestly. This breed sheds heavily and needs very little grooming. That is the opposite trade: almost nothing to do to the animal, but hair on the sofa, the car and your school uniform, all year.

Being left alone. Fine alone for a few hours. A full working day, every day, is asking a lot.

Training. Trains at an average pace. Consistent, reward-based training from day one does most of the work. If it is a puppy, measure for the adult — this one ends up in the biggest crate made.
