The Cattle Dog was built to drive half-wild cattle across enormous distances in the Australian outback, and it was crossed with the dingo to get the toughness to survive doing it. That ancestry shows. This is a hard, tireless, self-possessed dog with a bite-first herding style — the nickname "heeler" is literal — and an extremely low tolerance for boredom. It is also one of the longest-lived medium breeds on this list. For a family that hikes, runs, farms or competes in dog sports, an ACD is a superb partner. For a family that wants a dog to fit around school and work, it is close to the worst possible choice, and shelters see the results of that mismatch constantly.

Day to day. High-energy — this is a dog that needs a real outlet every single day, not a stroll. Skip that and you get chewing, barking and digging, which is not naughtiness, it is boredom. A food puzzle at dinner time is the cheapest way to give a busy brain a job when the weather cuts the walk short. On noise, it is about average.

The coat, honestly. This breed sheds a normal amount and needs very little grooming. Almost nothing to do to the coat itself; you will still find hair on the sofa, so keep the vacuum handy.

Being left alone. Fine alone for a few hours. A full working day, every day, is asking a lot.

Training. Trains at an average pace. Consistent, reward-based training from day one does most of the work. With a puppy, size the crate for the grown dog, not the one you carry in.
