Which cat breed fits your family?
Cat breeds differ less dramatically than dog breeds, but coat care, how much a cat talks and whether it wants a lap vary enormously โ and those are the things you live with every day. Answer six questions and we will show you the ones that actually fit your home โ then you can read about each one properly.
The six questions, and what each one changes
Here is the whole cat breed quiz before you start it. The first one are quick facts that demote breeds rather than rule them out โ an allergy makes a heavy-shedding breed a worse fit, it does not pretend the breed stopped existing.

โ Common questions
How do I choose the right cat breed for my family?
Cat breeds differ far less in size and exercise needs than dog breeds do, so the things that actually shape daily life are coat care, how much the cat talks, and whether it wants to be on your lap or left alone. Decide those three first and the shortlist gets short quickly.
What is the best cat breed for a family with young children?
Temperament matters more than breed, and an adult cat whose personality you can already see is a safer bet than any kitten. Look for a cat that tolerates handling, and teach children to leave it alone while it eats or sleeps. Very small, fine-boned or highly strung breeds suit older children better.
Are any cat breeds hypoallergenic?
No. Some breeds, including the Siberian, have a reputation for producing less of the protein most people react to, and some allergy sufferers genuinely do better with a particular cat โ but individual cats vary enormously and no breed is allergy-proof. Spend time with the specific cat before deciding.
Should we adopt or buy a cat?
Adopt first. Most cats in shelters are Domestic Shorthairs and Longhairs, they avoid the inherited problems that concentrate in pedigree lines, and staff can tell you how each one behaves around children. Pedigree rescues exist too if you have your heart set on a breed.
