🐈 Average😌 Low energy🧼 Low grooming🧹 Some shedding🤫 Quiet🚪 Independent🧒 Great with kids$$$

British Shorthairs are one of the better choices for a family with children. Expect an average-sized cat that is low-energy, sheds a normal amount and needs very little grooming. It is independent — affectionate on its own terms rather than yours.

The numbers

Typical lifespan14–18 years

A second number, and why it looks low. A 2024 study of UK veterinary records put life expectancy for British Shorthairs at 9.58 years (95% confidence interval 8.73–10.43). That is measured from birth, so unlike the range above it counts cats that died as kittens or young adults — and the study’s authors note that most deaths in their data were by euthanasia, which pulls the figure below a natural lifespan. UK cats of every kind average 11.74 years on that same measure.

The study counted this as British Blue and British Longhair grouped together rather than as a separate breed.

Based on 194 recorded deaths.

The oldest British Shorthair in that data reached 22.32 years.

What British Shorthairs are actually like

Day to day. Low-energy — a warm spot and a bit of gentle play is genuinely all this one asks for, which makes it one of the easiest cats to live with.

The coat, honestly. This breed sheds a normal amount and needs very little grooming. A brush a few times a week and the occasional tidy-up keeps it in good order.

Company and noise. This one is independent and quiet. It will choose when to be sociable, which suits some families perfectly and disappoints others. Nobody should buy this one hoping to change it.

Think again if…

The short version: British Shorthairs suit a home that is fairly calm, gives it room to be itself, and is not fussy about coat care. Meet the cat itself before deciding.

Health worth knowing about

⚕️ This breed has known heart problems. Ask about heart testing, and budget for regular check-ups.

Every animal is an individual, and plenty of British Shorthairs live long, healthy lives. This is here so nobody is surprised — ask a vet, and ask whoever you get the cat from what they have tested for.

What it costs to keep one

Rough running cost: $$$ (one of the pricier cats on our list) — because the breed has known health issues that can mean extra vet visits.

Those are relative bands, not live prices. For real numbers across every pet we cover, see the pet cost study and the cost calculator.

Rescues do have British Shorthairs and British Shorthair crosses, usually adults whose size, coat and temperament you can see rather than guess at.

🤩 Fun fact: The British Shorthair is thought to be the original inspiration for the Cheshire Cat.

❓ Common questions about British Shorthairs

Is a British Shorthair good with kids?

Yes — British Shorthairs have a strong reputation with children. As with any animal, an adult should supervise young kids and the cat together, and children need to learn to leave it alone while it eats or sleeps.

Do British Shorthairs shed a lot?

A normal amount. Regular brushing keeps most of it off your furniture.

Can a British Shorthair be left alone during the day?

Yes. This is one of the more self-sufficient breeds, and a working day on its own is not a problem provided it has food, water, a clean tray and something to climb.

Is a British Shorthair a good first cat?

Yes — this is one of the easier-going breeds for a family new to cats.

Should I get a British Shorthair?

British Shorthairs suit a home that is fairly calm, gives it room to be itself, and is not fussy about coat care. Meet the cat itself before deciding. Get one if: You want a cat that will put up with being picked up by a child; You want a calm animal that mostly sleeps somewhere warm; You want a cat whose coat looks after itself; You would rather share a house with something independent than be followed around; You want a quiet home. Think again if: You are picturing an animal that curls up on you every evening; A surprise vet bill would be a real problem this year; A shelter cat would do everything this one does for a fraction of the price.
