Am I Ready for a Praying Mantis?
A praying mantis is one of the most compelling small animals you can keep — an alien-looking ambush predator that tracks you with its head and hunts in front of you. It is also the shortest commitment here, often under a year. For some households that brevity is the appeal; for others it is the reason to choose something else.

The part people underestimate
Moulting, which is when almost all of them die. A mantis has to hang and shed its entire exoskeleton, and it needs enough vertical height and the right humidity to do it. Get either wrong and it fails halfway through, which is fatal and distressing to watch. Enclosure height — at least three times the mantis's length — is the single most important thing you will decide.
Who a praying mantis suits — and who it does not
Right for you if you want a genuinely fascinating predator to watch, you are comfortable feeding live insects, and a short life is acceptable — or even the point, as a first pet with a clear beginning and end.
Probably not if the household would find a short life upsetting, or if live feeder insects are out of the question. Mantises are also solitary and cannibalistic, so this is strictly one animal per enclosure.
