Newts and salamanders are quiet, cool-water amphibians that reward patient watching and ask very little in return. They are inexpensive, long-lived for their size, and entirely hands-off. The two constraints that decide whether they suit you are temperature — they need it cool — and the fact that their trade is unusually tangled in law.

The part people underestimate
The legal position, which is more complicated than for almost any other pet here. US federal rules restrict importing and moving many salamander species because of a fungal disease, and state rules add more on top. It does not make keeping them impossible, but it does mean checking carefully before you buy — and being wary of anyone selling them casually.
Who a newt or salamander suits — and who it does not
Right for you if you want a calm, cool-water tank to watch, you are content never to handle your pet, and you will check the rules that apply where you live before buying.
Probably not if your home runs warm, if you wanted an animal to interact with, or if you would rather not navigate the legal side at all. Amphibian skin also absorbs whatever it touches, so this is a look-only animal in a way that disappoints some children.

Are newts good pets for kids?
Good for watching, not for holding. Their skin is delicate and permeable, so handling should be avoided rather than supervised.
Are newts and salamanders legal to keep?
It varies, and more than for most pets — federal import rules and state restrictions both apply in the US. Check before you buy, not after.
