The part people underestimate
Enclosure length. Skinks are ground-dwelling and need to walk; the tanks commonly sold for lizards are far too short for an adult. This is the single most expensive thing to get wrong, because the correct enclosure is large enough that people try to make do and then have to replace it. Size it for the adult from the beginning.
Who a blue-tongued skink suits — and who it does not
