Am I Ready for a Crayfish?
A crayfish is a genuinely entertaining tank animal — bold, busy, constantly rearranging its territory, and with far more personality than most invertebrates. They are cheap to keep, hardy within reason, and they come with one non-negotiable quirk: they will attack almost anything else in the tank, including each other.

Work through these before you decide rather than after. There are no wrong answers and a "not yet" is a perfectly good result — it usually means one fixable thing stands between you and a pet you would do well by.

The part people underestimate
That a crayfish is usually a one-animal tank. People add one to an existing community and lose fish, shrimp and plants in short order, or keep two together and lose one. It is not aggression as a flaw, it is simply what they are. Plan a tank around the crayfish alone and it becomes a much easier, much more enjoyable pet.
Who a crayfish suits — and who it does not
Right for you if you like a bold, active animal to watch, you are happy to give it its own tank, and you enjoy the puzzle of building a setup with caves and hiding places it will constantly rearrange.
Probably not if you already have a community tank you are fond of, or if you want to keep several together. Moulting is also a vulnerable period during which they hide and must be left completely alone — another reason a tankmate is a bad idea.

Should I get a crayfish?
If you can give it a tank of its own, yes — they are among the most entertaining freshwater animals to watch and they cost very little to run.
Are crayfish good pets for kids?
Good for watching. They can pinch, so handling is not really the point, and the appeal is in observing an animal that is always doing something.
Can crayfish live with fish?
Rarely well. Most fish in a crayfish tank eventually become food. A species-only tank is the honest setup.
If a crayfish is not the one
A "not yet" is often really a "not this animal". These three ask less of a household on the things crayfishs ask most — worth a look before you rule out getting a pet at all.
