Land snails are the gentlest, cheapest, most genuinely low-effort pet on this site. They need a humid tank, a source of calcium, fresh vegetables, and almost nothing else. Children can hold them safely, they live several years, and watching one make its way across a hand is a small pleasure that does not wear off.
