Am I Ready for a Hissing Cockroach?
Hissing cockroaches are the pet that has to get past the name first. Once it does, they are among the most practical animals a family can keep: hardy, harmless, slow enough for a small child to hold, cheap to feed, and genuinely interesting. They hiss, they climb, and they are almost impossible to kill through ordinary inattention.

The part people underestimate
That they climb glass and the colony grows. A tank without a smooth barrier or a secure lid will not hold them, and a mixed-sex group breeds steadily — so a handful becomes a great many faster than expected. Neither is a problem if you planned for it. Both are a problem if you did not, and rehoming surplus cockroaches is harder than rehoming almost anything else.
Who a hissing cockroach suits — and who it does not
Right for you if you want a hardy, hands-on invertebrate that a nervous child can hold, you like the idea of a low-cost colony to watch, and the household finds the name funny rather than horrifying.
Probably not if anyone in the house would be genuinely distressed by them, or if an escape would be a serious problem where you live. Keeping a single-sex group avoids the breeding question entirely and is worth considering from the start.
