Digging depth. A gerbil in a shallow cage with a thin layer of bedding is a bored gerbil, and boredom shows up as bar-chewing and repetitive pacing. They want to tunnel, which means a deep base and a lot more bedding than the packaging suggests. It is an easy thing to get right and a very common thing to get wrong, and it changes the animal completely.
Who a gerbil suits — and who it does not
Right for you if you want a small pet that is actually awake in the daytime, you can keep a same-sex pair, and a deep tank-style setup rather than a shallow cage is something you are happy to provide. Gerbils suit children who like watching an animal build something.
Probably not if you want a lap pet — gerbils are quick and more interested in their tunnels than in you — or if you can only house one, since they are social and a lone gerbil does poorly. Note too that they are restricted in a couple of US states, which is worth checking before you buy.
