🐿️ How to Set Up a Sugar Glider Cage
Sugar gliders leap and glide, so go tall: a minimum of about 24 x 24 x 36 inches and bigger is better, with horizontal bars to climb and spacing of 1/2 inch or less so they cannot squeeze out. A tall multi-level cage suits them well.
Fill it vertically. Add branches, ropes, and several cozy sleeping pouches up high, plus plenty of rotating toys — gliders are active and intelligent and bore easily. A safe, no-axle exercise wheel gives them a place to run.
They are colony animals. Sugar gliders bond intensely and should never live alone — keep at least two — and they need a warm room (about 75 to 80°F) and a carefully balanced specialized diet. They are a long-term, high-effort exotic; see our best pets for kids guide to compare easier options.

🧽 Cleaning & maintenance
Spot-clean every day by scooping out soiled bedding, droppings, and leftover fresh food, and rinse the water bottle or bowl. Once a week do a bigger clean: change most or all of the bedding, wipe down the sugar glider cage or tank, and scrub the hideouts, dishes, and wheel. Use warm soapy water or a pet-safe small-animal cage cleaner and dry everything before adding fresh bedding — harsh household cleaners and strong scents irritate small lungs. Litter-trained pets make this quick if you scoop the litter box each day.
