🐴 How to Set Up Shelter and a Paddock for a Pony

A pony needs real outdoor space: a paddock or pasture (a common guideline is around one acre of grazing, less if you supplement with hay) plus a dry, draft-free run-in shelter or stall where it can escape sun, wind, and rain.

Fence it safely. Use horse-safe fencing such as wooden rail, vinyl, or smooth electric tape — never barbed wire, which causes serious injuries. Check fences regularly and remove hazards from the field.

Ponies are herd animals and need company — another pony, horse, or suitable companion animal — plus constant access to clean water and forage, and routine hoof and dental care. This is a large, long-term, costly commitment; see our pet cost guide before taking it on.

🧽 Cleaning & maintenance

Muck out regularly. Remove manure and soiled bedding from the shelter or stall every day or two, and keep food and water containers clean and topped up. Refresh bedding as needed and do a full clean-out on a regular schedule, using barn lime or a livestock-safe disinfectant on the floor to control odor and flies before laying down dry bedding. Keeping the living area and paddock clean and dry is one of the best ways to keep your pony healthy and parasite-free.
