🐷 How to Set Up Housing for a Mini Pig

A mini pig is not a cage or pen pet — it is more like a dog in space and care needs. Pigs need indoor room with a warm, soft bed (they love to burrow under blankets) plus access to a secure outdoor yard where they can root in soil and graze.

Fence strong and low. Pigs are powerful and determined diggers and lifters, so use sturdy fencing anchored at ground level to stop them rooting underneath it. Provide shade and a way to cool off — pigs sunburn and overheat easily and cannot sweat, so a shallow mud wallow or pool helps.

Give them a job: rooting. A rooting box, snuffle mat, or patch of yard to dig satisfies their strongest instinct and prevents boredom and destructive behavior. Check local zoning first — many areas restrict pigs as pets. See our pet cost guide to plan ahead.

🧽 Cleaning & maintenance

Muck out regularly. Remove manure and soiled bedding from the shelter or stall every day or two, and keep food and water containers clean and topped up. Refresh bedding as needed and do a full clean-out on a regular schedule, using barn lime or a livestock-safe disinfectant on the floor to control odor and flies before laying down dry bedding. Keeping the living area and paddock clean and dry is one of the best ways to keep your mini pig healthy and parasite-free.
